New Ormeau Ambulance Station to open within months

New Ormeau Ambulance Station to open within months

A MAJOR new ambulance station will open within months, providing a 24-hour service to a fast-growing part of the northern Gold Coast.

An initial staff of 16 paramedics and one officer in charge will work from the new $6.5 million station on Peachey Rd in Ormeau, which is due to be completed and operational from the middle of this year.

Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) Assistant Commissioner for the Gold Coast Region, Drew Hebbron, said he “can’t wait” to see staff operating from the new premises.

“This is a purpose-built state-of-the-art facility suited to the delivery of a modern service, including full development of the site to prepare the facility for the provision of ambulance services to the community for more than 40 years,” said Assistant Commissioner Hebbron.

“Officers throughout the Gold Coast Region do a fantastic job servicing the local community and that high standard of care will continue when the new ambulance station becomes active.

“Our staff proudly put on their uniform day in, day out for the community and I can’t wait to see them operating out of this new premises.”

Environment Minister and Gaven MP Meaghan Scanlon said the new station was part of a suite of healthcare facilities planned to service the growing population in the northern Gold Coast.

“We know that more and more families are calling the northern Gold Coast home and the Palaszczuk Government is committed to delivering the best healthcare,” Ms Scanlon said.

“It’s why we’re delivering a new $1.3 billion, 404-bed hospital in Coomera, have hired some 2,400 additional frontline staff on the Gold Coast since 2015 and are now building a new ambulance station at Ormeau.”

Plans for the station had previously been subject of concern by some locals, with 215 people signing a petition in 2019 objecting to its location.

Ms Scanlon said the site was chosen to allow a quick response to call-outs from ambulance crews.

“The location of the new ambulance station was selected with consideration to the safe access of emergency vehicles to major traffic routes and the capability of a quick response in all directions,” she said.

“Along with our commitment to providing new vehicles and additional staff, this new ambulance station is proof of the State Government’s commitment to keeping Queenslanders healthy no matter where they live.”
