Uncover why Mackay is so much more than just your average city

Final piece of City Centre public art unveiled

Mackay’s community art sculpture Meeting Place represents the diverse geographical areas of the region and the communities they support.

It’s iconic then that the mangrove-inspired sculpture is decorated with etchings created from prints made during eight public workshops attended by 124 participants.

City Centre Revitalisation project manager Jim Carless said Meeting Place was the final piece of public art to be installed as part of the City Centre revitalisation project.

“Mackay is so much more than just the city and we wanted to incorporate that by inviting residents from all over the region to contribute to this sculpture with prints that were traced into a CAD program and then laser etched onto the ‘branches’,” Mr Carless said.

Pit Pony

Pit Pony Experience merchandise will be available for purchase on the day, while the Lions Club and Collinsville Youth Coalition will provide a sausage sizzle and drinks.

The community raised almost $200,000 to build a life-size bronze pit pony statue, solar lighting, an app and more.

This year marks 25 years since the pit ponies were retired from working underground – on February 5, 1990.

The partnership between miner and pit pony in Collinsville began with the commencement of coal mining in 1921.
