What will the federal budget bring to the Gold Coast?

FUNDING for the Gold Coast cultural precinct could be a bridge too far for the Federal Government in tomorrow night’s Budget.

Mayor Tom Tate is hoping Treasurer Joe Hockey has been able to put aside about $10 million to help fund a large “friendship” green bridge expected to be part of the project’s $37.5 million first stage.

“If I can get $10 million contributed to the bridge our council could begin the construction so people can go across it and enjoy the first stage of the precinct during the Commonwealth Games.”

The funding would ensure the bridge was ready in time for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The bridge would connect Evandale to Chevron Island, where the council has already bought property ready for its construction.

Cr Tate said the funds would make a big difference to upcoming work.

“The part that the Federal Government could help with is the green bridge which has the potential for regional development funding,” he said.
